On the last Friday of Shravan Shukla Paksha, people of South India (especially married women of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) observe fast and pray Goddess Varalakshmi with utmost devotion for the wellbeing-prosperity of their family. Goddess Varalakshmi (one of the forms of Goddess Lakshmi & the consort of Lord Vishnu) is known to grant boons of children, spouse, money, health and success to Her devotees.

Worshipping Deity Varalakshmi on this pious day is considered equivalent to worshipping Ashtalakshmi, i.e. the eight Goddesses of Wealth (Sri),Earth (Bhu), Learning (Saraswati), Love (Priti), Fame (Kirti), Peace (Shanti), Pleasure(Tushti) and Strength(Pushti).

LEGENDS ASSOCIATED WITH LORD SHIVA & GODDESS PARVATI

  • According to Skanda Purana, once Devi Parvati urged Lord Shiva to enquire about a fast beneficial for women. Lord Shiva emphasized on the importance of Varalakshmi Vratham by narrating Her the story of a true devotee of Goddess Lakshmi – Charumati. Charumati was avidly devoted to her husband and family. Pleased with Charumati’s devotion and unshakeable faith, one day Goddess Lakshmi appeared in her dream and advised her to keep Vratham for the welfare of her family. Charumati followed the advice and observed fast with utmost dedication and sincerity, along with other neighbors. As a result, Goddess Lakshmi blessed Charumathi with the nine precious gems while other participants were blessed with fortune and prosperity.

    • RITUALS FOLLOWED

  • The fast is observed from morning until the evening puja of Varalakshmi Vratham.
  • Puja Items Required:
    • Kalasha
    • Coconut
    • Beetle leaves
    • Colored cloth
    • 5 varieties of fruits, esp. banana
    • Flowers (esp. lotus petals and Ganera)
    • Neivedhyam items such as Annam, Pasrichi Idly, Payasam, Vadai and Kozhakattai
    • Nonbu Saradu (Holy thread with nine nots and a flower in the middle)
    • Tumbler with water and spoon
    Although, one can perform puja during any of the above mentioned Muhurat time, evening is considered the most auspicious time.

  • Puja Viddhi:

    • A water- filled Kalasha is decorated with coconut, beetle leaves, flowers, colored cloth and an image of Goddess Varalakshmi.
    • First, Vinayaka Puja is carried out while reciting Ganesha Strotam followed by Varalakshmi Puja.
    • Varalakshmi Puja is carried out by chanting Lakshmi Sahasranamam or Mahalakshmi Ashtrotham.
    • After Puja, Neivedhyam (food items) is offered to the Goddess and is later distributed as Prasada.
    • Nonbu Sarad is tied on the right hand of devotees.
