Things You Should Never Do to the Sacred Tulsi Plant

In the Hindu culture, the Tulsi plant is considered as the most sacred plant. It is believed to be an earthly manifestation of Goddess Tulsi. Tulsi leaves are offered to Gods and Goddesses, especially Lord Vishnu. Not just temples, most Hindu households also have a Tulsi plant in their compounds and thousands of people worship the plant every day. It is believed that a Tulsi plant wards off your home from diseases and death.

Other than religious value, Tulsi leaves are known to possess amazing herbal healing properties. But, there are a few things that you should never do to the sacred Tulsi leaves.

Never Chew Tulsi Leaves

You must have heard from your elders that you should never chew Tulsi leaves. These sacred leaves are meant to be gulped down without your teeth touching them. This is no superstition. In fact, Tulsi leaves contain alloys that turn harmful when coming in contact with your teeth. They can even damage your gums. Doing these things to the sacred Tulsi leaves could have damaging effects.

Never Offer Tulsi Leaves To The Shivling

As per the Indian legends, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva devised a plan to kill an Asura named Jalandhar, who was blessed with a boon that he can never be defeated by the Gods. But his boon depended on the holy Krishna Kavach that he had and also on his wife’s chastity.

Lord Vishnu fooled Jalandhar to take his Krishna Kavach. Later, he disguised himself as Jalandhar and breached his wife’s chastity. Using the situation, Lord Shiva killed Jalandhar.

When his wife Vrinda (Tulsi) figured out the truth, she felt betrayed. She was blessed with divine status by Lord Vishnu. But since Lord Shiva had killed her husband, Tulsi denied the usage of her leaves for worshiping Lord Shiva.

Never Pluck Tulsi Leaves on Certain Days

You should never pluck Tulsi leaves on Sundays, Ekadashi, and solar and lunar eclipses. It is believed that plucking Tulsi’s leaves on this day is equivalent to taking away her chastity (the day Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu betrayed her).

Doing so invites ill fate. You can get cursed for life or may even face death. Along with these, you should also remember that using Tulsi leaves in the worship of Lord Ganesha will leave your worship fruitless. The Tulsi plant is always planted outside the homes or temples, in the compound area but not inside. However, you should never disrespect the leaves, as they are considered divine.
